Election Law: A Quick Look at How Some Court Rulings Affected Voting for Congress
The article/blog posting takes an interesting look at some races around the country. Most of the cases involved changing names on the ballot, for one reason or another.

elections and sports…

Posted by eric on November 8, 2006

What do the two have in common? Well, there are winners and losers. One has recounts, the other has ties. And some athletes are now succeeding in the political arena. Like Heath Shuler and a few others.

the digital switch

Senate Looks to Spend $3B on Digital TV
The digital conversion date keeps getting pushed back. I think everyone was supposed to start broadcasting DTV next year. Now, analog signals will be switched off at the end of 2008/early 2009. Of course, everyone will need a digital TV (or conversion box) to get the signals. And Congress doesn’t want anyone to be unable to watch TV. So they want to help people afford the converters. To the tune of $3B. Your tax dollars at work.

interesting…

The Washington Post has an editorial about a proposed exception to campaign financing laws for Internet ad spending. Basically, it would consider the Internet to *not* be a method of “public communication.” Right now, it’s the subject of a House hearing. Interesting.

campaign visits aren’t all they’re cracked up to be…

Posted by eric on October 17, 2004

from Communities cope with costs of campaign stops:

The campaign also reimbursed a local museum $1,100 for four young maple trees it asked to be cut down in a parking lot needed for the rally. But Springfield also spent about $15,000 on police overtime it doesn’t expect to see back.

That’s a lot of money.

Democrats give Ron Reagan prime time speaking slot
Interesting. I wonder if the nets will carry it. I know that NBC has already announced their plans for convention coverage.

blame Canada (if your pizza’s expensive)

Posted by eric on May 18, 2004

Canada turns up heat on frozen pizza — they’re going to put a huge duty (tax) on self-rising pizzas imported from the U.S. Wow. Not good if you’re looking for some good, cheap DiGiorno in Toronto. (from CNN)
(my apologies to the Canadian readership.)

warning: the following involves politics and math..

Math Against Tyranny takes a look at why the Electoral College is a good idea. It was written back in 1996, so the 2000 debacle isn’t mentioned, but it’s still very interesting. But heed the warning in the subject line. However, the article does use sports as a basis for its argument. Which is pretty cool.

sorry, I’m a politics nerd…

“A Kerry Landslide?” takes an interesting look at some of the polls and factors playing a role in November. The article makes the case that no matter what, it won’t be close — which I think is a good thing.
